Asst. Dean of Retention Services
Director of Academic Achievement Program

Education:
M.A. Student Development/Counseling, University of Iowa
B.A. Elementary Education, University of Northern Iowa

Lois Kabela-Coates has been working at Coe College for over two generations. Like many Coe students, Lois grew up in a small, rural community in Iowa. After finishing her graduate work at the University of Iowa, Lois first started work at Coe as the Evening Student Advisor and then served as the Counselor in the Academic Achievement Program. She has been serving as the Director of the program since 1988. Lois enjoys working with students on a variety of issues; including academic, career, financial and personal concerns. Her primary focus is to help students successfully complete a college education and help them make choices that will lead to a happy and fulfilling adult life. When away from Coe, Lois spends most of her time attending the many activities of her two young children. She is an avid runner, biker and gardener. She and her husband also love to travel.

Carol Smith
Assistant Director Academic Achievement Program
Reading Specialist

Education:
M.A. University of Iowa: Reading Specialist
B.A., University of Iowa

Carol Smith has been the Reading Specialist at Coe since 1991. Smith is a graduate of the University of Iowa, for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees. Before coming to Coe, she taught elementary, junior high and high schools students in reading, language arts, and English.

Smith, a native of Iowa, enjoys spending her free time at auctions, tag sales and flea markets. She has collected antiques for several years. She was thrilled when she learned to sell some of her purchases on Ebay.

Although Smith is a graduate of a large university, two of her three sons attended and graduated from Coe. Both pursued business and economics degrees. Her youngest son decided that he wanted to follow his mother's footsteps and be a Hawkeye. He recently graduated with a business degree from the University of Iowa.

As the Reading Specialist, Carol works with students on reading comprehension, diagnosis of reading difficulties, and textbook reading techniques. In addition, she provides help with note-taking, time management and test taking skills. She is coordinator of the college tutoring program. She also helps students with disabilities obtain accommodations. What she likes about her job the most, is the students. She finds it very rewarding helping students and watching them grow.

Emily Barnard
Counselor, Academic Achievement Program
(CAP) College Adjustment Peer Coordinator

Education:
M.S.W., Master of Social Work, University of Northern Iowa, 2004
B.A., Sociology, Coe College 2002

Being an alum of Coe ('02) gives Emily a unique perspective and ability to relate to students, staff and faculty. While a student here Emily majored in Sociology with a minor in Gender Studies. Emily also was a member of the Coe Women's Basketball team and was an assistant coach for the 2005-2006 season. After graduation from Coe, Emily earned her Master of Social Work at the University of Northern Iowa with an emphasis in micro practice. Prior to returning to Coe she worked as a RTSS therapist and Co-Occurring Case Manager for a non-profit agency in Iowa City.

Here, at Coe, she consults daily with students both about their academic difficulties and their personal problems, including a wide range of concerns but not limited to: adjustment to college, stress, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance use, roommate conflicts and other emotional concerns. She also works closely with students to help them develop better study skills, better time management, and better communication skills between faculty and the rest of the campus community. Emily sees herself as a resource and support person, who empowers students to develop a holistic approach towards their educational and life experiences.

In her free time Emily enjoys playing volleyball, basketball, and staying active. Emily and her husband are devoted Iowa Hawkeye fans, enjoy boating, camping and love to travel. Emily and her husband reside in Cedar Rapids with their dog, Kinnick.
