Office of Service-Learning and Campus Engagement

Mission Statement & Vision

Mission: The Office of Service-Learning and Campus Engagement exists to provide students with service-learning, leadership, community and campus engagement opportunities that will enhance their values, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Vision: "A community of valued learners who work together to develop and discover their knowledge and abilities that can make a difference in society."

Service-Learning Requirement Description

All first-year students complete twenty hours of service-learning which will be accomplished through a seminar component. To complete their requirement, students will need to register for an independent seminar study (SL Independent Study) or a regular scheduled seminar (SL 101) either in the fall or spring semester. Registration can take place when registering for classes. This seminar will bring together students from several disciplines to discuss ways in which to further integrate service-learning into their academic experience. Students will be oriented to service-learning through twenty hours of pre-approved, unpaid community service and a monthly seminar. Students will reflect upon their experiences, their current and future impact, and the implications for life-long learning through the writing of reflection logs, other brief papers, and group reflection sessions. We will seek to encourage a productive dialog between community partners, students, and academics in order to address community issues and further the Coe College's mission.

Issue Dinner and Campus Engagement

The Office of Service-Learning and Campus Engagement coordinates all the first year students graduation requirements. These requirements include an issue dinner and 7 other campus engagement events. An Issue Dinner brings students together with faculty and staff to hear a brief talk, enjoy a meal together and engage in conversation about the issues raised in the address. Quite simply, this is an exercise where students are presented with a controversial or provocative topic and then expected to formulate, articulate, and defend their views in a civil conversation. Coe firmly believes this is an acquired skill that all liberal arts graduates should master.

Campus Engagement events include student attending plays, lectures, concerts, art shows, and other cultural events that expand their educational experiences.
