Office of Service-Learning and Leadership

Coe College is committed to enhancing individual leadership skills and qualities by providing programs on campus that foster experiences for developing the leaders of tomorrow. Although leadership development occurs in every facet of campus life, here are a few programs to help students develop their leadership skills.

Leadership Convocation

Each year Coe honors those individuals and groups who have made an impact on campus through their leadership involvement. They are recognized at the annual Leadership Convocation.

Crimson & Gold Leadership Program

What is Crimson and Gold?

Coe Crimson and Gold (CCG) is an exciting and diverse leadership experience giving participants the opportunity to gain critical leadership skills and valuable leadership experiences. There are two different programs offered for you to choose from: Crimson and Gold.

Crimson Program – Designed for beginning leaders – perhaps first-time organizational officers or new Coe students.

Gold Program – Designed for developing experienced leaders – students who have been in a variety of campus leadership positions or have graduated from the Crimson Program. A service-learning emphasis is available in the Gold Program for students desiring to complete additional community service.

Why participate in Coe Crimson and Gold?

While participating in leadership experiences is a wonderful way to meet new people, connect to the college, and give to the community, it also serves a higher purpose. Today’s employers are in desperate need of educated individuals with solid leadership skills and an ability to apply those skills to real world environments. Participating in Coe Crimson and Gold is an ideal way to gain these skills and build a portfolio of experiences you can market upon graduation.

Service-Learning and Leadership Development

The Coe Crimson and Gold Program values community service as an integral part of leadership development. In past years, students have ventured to numerous non-profit organizations for unique service opportunities. Students found the service-learning opportunity to be a highlight of the program. As it is a requirement of the program, Crimson and Gold students will again volunteer their services to worthy non-profit organization in Cedar Rapids. Students in the Gold Program who want to extend their service-learning beyond this one day commitment are encouraged to complete the service learning emphasis of the Gold Program.

Your Commitment

Students are welcome to attend any or all sessions in the Crimson and Gold Program. Students who attend a minimum of 10 sessions from their respective program and complete the one day community service component (approximately 5 hours) will gradate from CCG and be recognized at the College Leadership Convocation in the spring. All students should attend the presentation on October 13th about service-learning as one of their ten sessions. Students in the Gold Program who would like to complete the service-learning emphasis will need to attend a minimum of five sessions in the Gold Program, complete twenty hours of community service and write a personal reflection journal.

Leadership isn’t about rank, position or unfair use of power, but rather it’s about a person’s ability to help people around them succeed.
