JANUARY

Future of Bariatric Surgery Scholarship
Bariatric Surgery Source created this scholarship to increase awareness and encourage new activity in the bariatric field. They are offering a bi-annual scholarship to a student who submit an essay with a minimum of 2,000 words describing how the field of bariatric surgery will evolve in the next five years.

  • Criteria: Be majoring in any medically-related degree, have a G.P.A. of at least 2.5
  • Submission Deadline: January 1, July 1
  • Amount: $1,000

The Loganix Scholarship
This new scholarship is awarded on the basis of an infographic that responds to a given topic-related cause, up to change each year. Along with the infographic, students must submit a brief statement, less than 400 words, about him/herself, including any volunteer or professional experience in a related field.

  • Criteria: Be living in the U.S. or Canada
  • Submission Deadline: January 1
  • Amount: $1,000

Military College Scholarship
This scholarship is intended for students who are either in the military themselves or have a parent serving in the Armed Forces. Applications are to be found on their website and emailed in for submission. Friends and family can also nominate potential recipients though the application must still be filled out by the deadline.

  • Criteria: Have a mother or father in the U.S. Armed Forces or be in the military yourself

Unity Point Health Trinity Scholarships
Unity Point Health is offering several scholarships to help further education. An overview of the different scholarships can be found on the webpage.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholarships
HSF Scholarships are reserved solely for Hispanic students seeking a college education though the organization offers several scholarships with varying criteria. We encourage you to watch for updated scholarship info throughout your scholarship search.

  • Criteria: GPA of at least 3.0, Be a Hispanic student
  • Submission Deadline: January 15 (may vary)
  • Amount: Varies between scholarships

Wells Fargo Scholarship Program For People With Disabilities
Wells Fargo has committed $1 million to awarding this scholarship for the next four years in order to help people with disabilities obtain the education needed to succeed. Scholarships are awarded to both full-time and half-time students, and are renewable. An essay submission is needed.

  • Criteria: Have an identified disability, Have a G.P.A. of at least 3.0
  • Submission Deadline: January 17 or until 700 applications are submitted
  • Amount: Up to $2,500

Des Moines Women’s Club Scholarships
The Des Moines Women’s Club offers scholarships to students primarily on the basis of his/her area of study and on being female, though some are offered to any student regardless of sex or major. There are 13 scholarships in total, each of which has its own application. Students may only apply to a single DMWC scholarship. We encourage you to glance at the easy-to-access eligibility requirements and applications for each of these scholarships and apply to the one best suited for you.

Point Foundation National LGBTQ Scholarship Fund
Point is currently supporting 80 full-time undergraduate and graduate scholars; each scholar is paired with a mentor who advises the scholar on education and career decisions, and also helps guide them through the completion of an annual community service project.

  • Criteria: Identify as a LGBTQ student
  • Submission Window: November 1 - January 30
  • Amount: Up to $10,000

National Debt Relief Scholarship
National Debt Relief awards 5 scholarships to student pursuing a degree in STEM fields. To apply, students must provide a unique solution to a question listed on their website. The answer can be in the form of an essay, an infographic, or a video.

  • Criteria: Be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, if a high school senior: have a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Submission Deadline: January 31
  • Amount: $1,000

FEBRUARY

National FFA Scholarship Program
The National FFA Organization has $2 million available - more than 1500 individual awards - to assist students across the country pay for their college educations. One in every five students who apply are said to receive scholarships.

  • Criteria: Be an FFA member

  • Amount: Varies between scholarships (Student has received $1,000)

Hy-Vee Scholarships
Hy-Vee offers $80,000 of scholarships to students who presently work or have previously worked at a Hy-Vee location in the past. Children of Hy-Vee employees with a minimum of six months employment are also considered. To be considered, a student must submit an application as well as a short essay, a resume, and proof of academic success. A letter of recommendation, though not required, can help in the decision process.

  • Criteria: Be a present or past Hy-Vee employee or have a parent with six months’ employment at a Hy-Vee location
  • Submission Deadline: February 10
  • Amount: $1,000

Helen M. McLorain Figure Skating
The Pioneer Fund aims to assist current and former amateur and professional ice skaters who have previously dedicated their lives to skating. In 2013, forty scholarships were awarded.

  • Criteria: Have competed at least once in a U.S. Figure Skating competition
  • Submission Deadline: Mid-February
  • Amount: Varies $3,000-$7,000

Daughters of the American Revolution
Daughters of the American Revolution offer several scholarships to students who fill out the necessary application materials which are easily downloadable from their website. Scholarships each have their own criteria based on area of study or on personal heritage as an American Indian. Financial need is taken into account for each scholarship.

Richard P. Erickson Scholarship Program
This scholarship opportunity is available only to those who have a parent or a grandparent who is a Lifetouch employee. Twenty-five awards were given in 2013.

  • Criteria: Be a child or grandchild of a previous or current Lifetouch employee
  • Submission Deadline: February 20
  • Amount: $2,000

Avon Foundation
Avon Representatives award scholarships to students all across the world. Not much more is known about this opportunity as of right now.

  • Amount: $1,500 or $2,500 (dependent on full-time or part-time study)

ProofreadingServices.com Video Poetry Scholarship
Students can write an original poem in English and then record a video reading of it. Of those submitted, three high school student and three college students (both graduate and undergraduate) will be awarded scholarships. After posting the video on YouTube, you can complete a brief application on their website, including a link to the video.

  • Criteria: None

  • Amount: $100-500

MARCH

ACS Scholars Program
ACS awards are intended for minority students who are pursuing a college degree in chemistry. Awards are renewable annually.

  • Criteria: Be an African American, Hispanic, or American Indian student
  • Submission Window: November 1 - March 1
  • Amount: Up to $5,000

Ascentra Scholarship Competition
The Ascentra Credit Union is offering a total of $10,000 in scholarships; five scholarships to high school students and five scholarships to non-traditional college students over the age of 19. An essay of approximately 500 words is necessary to apply.

  • Amount: $1,000

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation
The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation offers significant, renewable awards to children of current and past Marines. If eligible, a student can apply by filling out an application on their website and submitting specified financial documents.

  • Criteria: Be a child of a current U.S. Marine or Navy Corpsman or a veteran, Have a GPA of at least 2.0, Demonstrate financial need
  • Submission Window: January 1 - March 2
  • Amount: $1,500-$10,000 per academic year

Create-A-Greeting-Card Scholarship
This very untraditional scholarship is awarded solely on the basis of a visual image to be used for a greeting card. More details can be found on their website and their easily accessed entry form.

  • Criteria: None
  • Submission Window: May 31 - March 2
  • Amount: $10,000

Centennial Mental Health Center
This scholarship is being offered to students who intend to complete a bachelor degree in a behavior health related field. Students must submit an application, transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and an essay. Students must show academic achievement, aptitude and community service. The award amount will be based on the student’s enrollment status.

  • Criteria: Live in Centennial’s ten-county catchment area
  • Submission Deadline: March 14
  • Amount: $500-$2,000

Account Control Technology Foundation Scholarships
ACT offers two scholarships, the ACT Cares Community Scholarship and the ACT Foundation Second-Year Scholarship. Potential applicants for the two scholarships are, respectively, high school seniors and first year college students. A total of twenty-five of each scholarship—for a total of fifty—are awarded each year to students nationwide.

  • Criteria: Be a high school senior or a first-year college student, Be from one of the communities listed on their webpage
  • Submission Window: January - March 15
  • Amount: $1,000

Charles M Bair Memorial Scholarship
Students must submit at least two letters of recommendation, ACT and/or SAT scores, a personal essay, and other basic application materials.

  • Criteria: Returning students must have a GPA of at least 3.0
  • Submission Deadline: March 15
  • Amount: Varies between recipients

Schwan Scholarship Program
Schwan's Corporate Giving Foundation awards up to 40 scholarships annually to the children of its employees. Recipients are selected based on financial need, academic success, leadership, participation in extra-curricular activities and in their community, work experiences, career goals, and other notable special circumstances.

  • Criteria: Must be the child of an employee of the Schwan Food Company
  • Submission Deadline: March 15
  • Amount: $2,500

Sleepopolis Scholarship
The only requirement for this scholarship is to make a short video (no longer than five minutes) answering the questions listed on the Sleepopolis website. The video that is the most creative, innovative, informative, entertaining, and interesting will be awarded.

  • Criteria: Have a GPA of at least 3.0
  • Submission Deadline: March 30
  • Amount: $1,000

Foster Care to Success
Foster Care to Success provides both Education Training Vouchers of $5,000 (in select states) and general awards which are renewable for up to five years.

  • Criteria: Have been in a foster care and fulfill more specific requirement listed on their webpage.
  • Submission Window: January 1 -  March 31
  • Amount: $1,500-6,000 per academic year

Folds of Honor Scholarship
The Folds of Honor Foundation offers scholarships annually to the spouses and children of those killed or disabled in service of the United States.

  • Criteria: Must be the spouse or child or a service member in the U.S. armed forces who was killed while in service, died as a result of injuries sustained, is a POW or MIA, or was awarded a Purple Heart
  • Submission Window: January 1 - March 31
  • Amount: Varies between scholarships

The Sleeklens Academic Scholarship Program
To apply, write an essay between 1,000 and 1,600 words that discusses the potential use of social media to help get a job after college. Essays can be emailed to Sleeklens for submission; students also must complete a short form on their webpage.

  • Criteria: Be fully accepted to a college for the upcoming year
  • Submission Deadline: March 31
  • Amount: $2,000

Mary Greeley Medical Center Scholarships
In the search bar in the top right corner, search “scholarship” and click on the first result, titled “Scholarship Opportunities.”  The scholarships listed are reserved for students pursuing degrees in nursing or in another health-related career.

APRIL

The Barry J. Nace "Pursuit of Justice" Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to students who show a strong passion for civil rights justice. A 300-word statement describing why civil justice is important to you, as well as a description of what the scholarship money would be used on, is required.

  • Criteria: Be accepted into an undergraduate program at a university or college
  • Submission Deadline: April 1
  • Amount: $5,000

Mercy Medical Center Scholarships
Mercy Medical Center offers two scholarships—the New Hampton Auxiliary Scholarship and the Vianna Holschlag Nursing Scholarship—which are offered, respectively, to Chickasaw County high school seniors and any prospective or current student. Applications can be easily found online and completed with one supporting letter of reference.

  • Criteria: Be pursuing a career in nursing or a medical field

  • Amount: $500

Great Lakes STEM Scholarships
Great Lakes’ National Scholars Program offers up to 750 awards to students across the country planning on or currently pursuing STEM majors.

  • Criteria: GPA of at least 2.75, Pursue a STEM major, Demonstrate financial need
  • Submission Window: February 15 - April 5
  • Amount: $2,500

American Legion Scholarships
The American Legion offers several distinctly unique awards with specific criteria for each one. We encourage all students to read through the list of award opportunities on their website.

Senior Care Innovation Scholarship
A Place for Mom offers five annual scholarships to those who use their education to provide assistance for the senior population. Nursing, medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and sociology are all potentially applicable majors. Proof of volunteer work as well as a letter of reference are also required for consideration.

  • Criteria: Be an employee or related to an employee of A Place for Mom. Use your education to assist the senior population
  • Submission Deadline: April 15
  • Amount: $1,000

RentHop Apartment Scholarship
The RentHop Apartment Scholarship awards students who complete a 1000 word essay explaining where they see themselves 5 years after finishing school. The award also includes an optional internship with RentHop, if applicable.

  • Criteria: None
  • Submission Deadline: April 30, August 31
  • Amount: $1,000

GreenPal Business Scholarship
GreenPal Business Scholarship is awarded to students who own and operate their own small business, or who have put together a business plan to start a business in college. Applicants must be a high school senior, college freshman or sophomore.

  • Criteria: Have a GPA of at least 3.0, Be a Business major, Demonstrate high ambition and desire to be an entrepreneur.
  • Submission Window: January 1 - April 30
  • Amount: $1,000 per academic year ($2,000 total awarded over 2 years)

MAY

Edward Arthur Mellinger Educational Fund
Offering up to 300 scholarships to students residing in specific counties of western Illinois, the Edward Arthur Mellinger Educational Fund are renewable annually as long as the student maintains proficient academic standing.

  • Criteria: Reside in one of six Illinois counties (Fulton, Henderson, Knox, McDonough, Mercer, or Warren)
  • Submission Deadline: May 1
  • Amount: Varies $600-1,700

ICSAC: Robert D. Blue Scholarship
ICSAC Scholarship recipients are chosen on a basis of truth, courage, fellowship, and moral force of character. The awards are reserved solely for those attending Iowa colleges or universities. Applications for the award can easily be filled out and submitted online.

  • Criteria: Presently reside in Iowa
  • Submission Deadline: May 10
  • Amount: $500-$1,000

Dickson Law Group Scholarship
To apply for the scholarship, students must create a video essay (1 to 3 minutes in length) that discusses a topic posted on the scholarship webpage.

  • Criteria: Be in good academic standing
  • Submission Deadline: May 15
  • Amount: $1,000

SeniorCare Aging Matters Scholarship
One student is chosen each year on the basis of a response to why aging matters in under 1,000 words. A brief online application, including the essay, is available on their webpage.

PFIA Scholarship
The Police and Firemen’s Insurance Association awards 100 scholarships annually to the descendants of its members. Recipients are selected based on leadership, participation in extra-curricular activities and in their community, work experiences, career goals, and other notable special circumstances.

  • Criteria: GPA of at least 2.5, Must be a child or grandchild of a member of the PFIA
  • Submission Window: March 15 – May 15
  • Amount: $1,500

B. Davis Scholarship
One annual award is given to a student who describes the three characteristics of leadership they value most in fewer than 1,000 words.  Applicants must discuss why they believe that these traits are so important and how they are developed in an individual.

  • Criteria: Be a high school junior, senior, or be enrolled in any post-secondary institution
  • Submission Deadline: May 23
  • Amount: $1,000

Adrian Altshuler's "Just Need a Chance" Educational Scholarship
This scholarship is offered by a practicing lawyer wishing to help a student toward a future in law. Students must fill out the application, including a short statement on why they require financial aid (including a description of how the money would be spent) as well as a creative short statement on why they should be awarded the scholarship.

  • Criteria: GPA of at least 3.0
  • Submission Deadline: May 25
  • Amount: $5,000

Addiction Resource Scholarship
Addiction Resource awards scholarships of varying degrees to three students who submit a 1,000 to 1,500 word essay responding to the questions related to ending substance abuse and addiction. More information, including the specific questions can be found on their website.

  • Criteria: Be accepted or enrolled in a undergraduate or graduate program
  • Submission Window: November 1 - May 31
  • Amount: Up to $2,000

American Indian College Fund
The American Indian College Fund offers scholarships for both tribal students and non-tribal students. There are two separate applications, one for scholarships offered only to tribal students and another for those offered to all students.

  • Criteria: Either a tribal student or not (two separate scholarships)
  • Submission Window: January 1 - May 31, 2015
  • Amount: Unknown

JUNE/JULY/AUGUST

180 Medical Scholarship Program
This scholarship, offered by 180 Medical, is only available to those who have suffered from one of the physical injuries listed on their scholarship page.

  • Criteria: "Be under physician's care for a spinal cord injury, spina bifida, transverse myelitis, or neurogenic bladder"
  • Submission Window: January 1 - June 1
  • Amount: $1,000

Abbott and Fenner Scholarships
The application process includes a required essay about your educational and life goals. The number of awards has varied since 2007 between 1 and 4.

  • Criteria: None
  • Submission Deadline: June 12
  • Amount: $1,000

BigSun Scholarship
The BigSun Scholarship is offered to students on the basis of an essay the addresses how high school sports have influence them. There is no set number of scholarships that will be awarded, and therefore we cannot guarantee there is a feasible opportunity to receive a scholarship.

  • Criteria: Must have been a high school athlete
  • Submission Deadline: June 17
  • Amount: $500

MyBioSource Scholarship
Five scholarships are awarded to students pursuing a degree in a related science major. A 250 word response that answers why you have chosen to enter the field of science and why you should receive the scholarship is required.

  • Criteria: Have a GPA of at least 3.0, have an intended major in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Molecular Biology or a related science field
  • Submission Deadline: June 17
  • Amount: $1,000

ABC Humane Wildlife Control & Prevention Inc.’s Academic Scholarship
ABC Wildlife is offering a $1,000 scholarship to female students looking to pursue a career in science. An essay response of 1,000 or fewer words is required to apply. The essay prompt can be found on the ABC Wildlife website. Up to nine additional students may receive awards for their submissions.

  • Criteria: Identify as female, be planning to study in a STEM field
  • Submission Deadline: June 26
  • Amount: $1,000

PWN Scholarship
The Professional Women’s Network offers four scholarships to women who will attending one of a specific set of colleges which includes Coe. The PWN Scholarship Foundations was established initially to assist non-traditional women students restricted by financial constraints.

  • Criteria: Must be a woman who resides in Iowa or is affiliated to PWN
  • Submission Deadline: June 30
  • Amount: $500

Solar Scholarship
Solar Action Alliance is a group of environmentalists who want to spread the word about using the sun as a source of renewable energy. To do this, they are offering a scholarship to one student who writes an essay of 500-1,000 words on the topic.

  • Criteria: Minimum GPA of 3.2
  • Submission Deadline: July 1
  • Amount: $1,000

Safe Driver Scholarship
The Safe Driver Scholarship offers a single scholarship of $1,000 awarded annually during each Fall semester. The application process includes creation of some kind of social awareness that inspires others to focus on safe driving and filling out an application.

  • Criteria: Participate in a specified Safe Driver Program (listed on their website)
  • Submission Deadline: July 15
  • Amount: $1,000 each fall semester

Tutor the People Scholarship
Tutor the People are offering a Pre-Med scholarship to one student who writes an essay of 300 – 500 words answering a prompt given on their webpage.

  • Criteria: Be enrolled in college for the upcoming academic semester
  • Submission Deadline: August 15
  • Amount: $1,000

RentHop Apartment Scholarship
The RentHop Apartment Scholarship awards students who complete a 1000 word essay explaining where they see themselves 5 years after finishing school. The award also includes an optional internship with RentHop, if applicable.

The LPGA Foundation
The LPGA Foundation offers aid to students on the basis of their participation in golf. Awards are given to more than twenty high school seniors.

  • Amount: Mostly $5,000, one $1,250

AES Engineering Solutions
The AES Scholarship is awarded to students on the basis of a 500-1,000 word essay which prompts for a demonstration of character and answers a question given on the organization’s website.

General Scholarship for Higher Learning
HotelsCheap.org sponsors two scholarships in the amount of $1,500. The application for these awards can easily be found and filled out online.

Enhanced Insurance Scholarship Program
Enhanced Scholarship.com is offering one award per 250 essays submitted. Essays on the topic listed on the website are to be between 750 and 1,250 words.

  • Amount: $2,500

NOVEMBER

Artistic Excellence in Print Design & Marketing Scholarship
The scholarship, sponsored by Digital Brands Inc., is available to any student who submits a business card, brochure, poster, and flyer that showcase the applicant’s design abilities while also displaying why (s)he deserves the award, highlighting academic achievement, experience, and future goals.

  • Criteria: Be majoring in Graphic Arts & Design or a related field, GPA of at least 3.0
  • Submission Deadline: November 30
  • Amount: $1,000

Start Standing Scholarship
Start Standing is offering a biannual scholarship to students who are currently attending or planning on attending college. In order to applicants must submit a 1,000 to 2,000 word essay that answers the questions listed on their website.

  • Criteria: minimum GPA of 3.0, be at least 16, be at least a senior in high school
  • Submission Window: March 31, November 15
  • Amount: $1,000

Insureon Scholarship Program
Insureon offers multiple scholarships throughout the year based on an essay response about how small businesses have changed your life.

  • Criteria: Have a small business story

DECEMBER

Internet Security Scholarship
This scholarship, offered by Digicert, requires you to write a short essay answering the question “Where do you see Internet security in five years?” and post it to a personal published blog or website.

  • Criteria: None (Have a personal blog or website to post your essay to.)
  • Submission Deadline: December 1
  • Amount: $1,000

Internet of Things Scholarship
Digicert offers an easy-to-apply scholarship for those who post a 400-600 word essay to a personal blog or website that answers the question “How does the Internet of Things affect your future?” For details on what is meant by “Internet of Things” and on how to submit, visit their website.

  • Criteria: GPA of at least 2.5, (Have a personal blog or website to post your essay to.)
  • Submission Deadline: December 1
  • Amount: $1,000

PlayYourCourse Young Entrepreneur Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to the applicant who submits a video, no longer than five minutes, that answers the questions posted on their website using the most creative, innovative, informative, entertaining, and interesting presentation style.

  • Criteria: Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Submission Deadline: December 1
  • Amount: $1,000

Look Twice, Save A Life Scholarship
Insuranceproviders.com offers a single scholarship to someone who creates some sort of social awareness that inspires students to look twice for motorcycles when driving. This can be in the form of a video, essay, piece of visual art, or anything else that sends a message of additional caution.

  • Criteria: Have a valid driver's license
  • Submission Deadline: December 1

Online Resume Builders Scholarship
Online Resume Builders is offering an annual scholarship available to both regular students as well as students who are studying abroad. They are offering the award to the best resume, and all that is needed to apply is the resume. (It doesn’t have to be your real resume, it’s the format that counts).

  • Criteria: Be enrolled, or due to be enrolled
  • Submission Window: January 1 – December 15
  • Amount: $1,000

Billings & Barret First In Family Scholarship
Billings & Barret want to help students who are the first in their families to attend college, so they are offering this scholarship to a student who wants to further their education. A 500 word statement describing the impact of being your family’s first member to attend college is required to apply.

  • Criteria: Be the first member of your family to attend college, have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Submission Deadline: December 31
  • Amount: $1,000

Whitley Law Firm Distracted Driving Prevention Scholarship
The Whitley Law firm is looking to raise awareness on the issue of distracted driving, while also helping a student offset the costs of college. To do so, they are offering a scholarship to a student who submits a 1,000 essay on the topic of distracted driving.

  • Criteria: Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Submission Deadline: December 31
  • Amount: $1,500
