Kohawks move into sole possession of second
place
No. 25 Coe (18-4, 4-2 IIAC) defeated Simpson (16-9,
3-2 IIAC) in Iowa Conference volleyball action Oct. 10 in Indianola.
The Storm won the opening game 30-27. Game two saw the match tied
eight separate times. With the scored tied at 27, Nicole Spree’s
hitting attack was ruled out, but the call was overturned after
a meeting between the officials, giving Coe a one-point lead.
A Storm hitting error made it 29-27. Erika Amfahr got Simpson
within one, but on the next play, Rachel Schmidt posted a kill
to win the game 30-28 for the Kohawks.
Coe held the Storm to -.043 hitting (9-11-47) in game three to
take a 30-22 win. The Kohawks got off to a hot start in game four,
leading by as much as six. With Coe leading 21-17, Simpson mounted
a charge, taking a 27-26 lead on a Tiffany Everding kill. A Storm
service error tied the score at 27 on the next play. Another unforced
Simpson mistake, this time a hitting error, gave Coe a 28-27 lead.
Schmidt’s only service ace of the match made it 29-27. After
a short rally, Spree’s kill ended the match, giving Coe
the victory.
Shannon Nelson and Spree each had 14 kills to pace the Kohawks.
Nelson hit .364 for the match (14-2-33). Spree, whose two older
sisters, Casey and Rachael both played at Simpson, added a team
high 18 digs and a team high six blocks. Amber Karkosh had 12
kills, nine digs, and five blocks. Coe setter Kristy Upah had
43 assists and 16 digs.
Everding led the Storm as she tallied 16 kills and 22 digs. Jessica
Martin posted 14 kills and 23 digs. Tara Christensen dished out
48 assists and had 10 digs. The 5-7 setter also had a solo block.
