Kohawks fall to Wheaton in second
round of NCAA Tourney
SAINT PETER, Minn. - After reaching
the second round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament
for the second-straight year, the Coe women's team
has concluded its season. The Kohawks fell 5-1 to
top-seeded Wheaton Friday at the Swanson Tennis Center
on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College.
The Kohawks took one doubles match from
the Thunder, with junior Molly Fiala
(Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) and Andrea
Schupbach (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) teaming
up to win 8-6 at number one doubles. Coe fell 9-8
and 8-2 at number two and three doubles.
Wheaton's Jordan Cook, the third-rated
player in the nation, defeated Fiala 6-1, 6-3 for
the Thunder's third win of the match at number one
singles. Schupbach fell to Brittney Dunn at number
four singles 6-3, 6-1, while junior Susan
Gilmer (Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln) lost 6-2,
6-4 to Kayli Edwards at number six singles. The Kohawks
were leading in the remaining three matches that were
unfinished.
The Kohawks finished the season with
a 23-4 record overall, breaking the school record
for wins set by last year's 17-6 squad.
