Kohawks win second straight IIAC championship

IOWA CITY , Iowa - Coe College won its second Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Women’s Tennis Championship in as many years Saturday, defeating Luther College, 5-4 in the Championship match on the Don Klotz Tennis Courts at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex in Iowa City. With the victory, the Kohawks earn the opportunity to host the Conference's Automatic Qualifier Tournament in April where an automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship will be on the line.

Coe, which entered the six-team Team Tournament as the top seed, repeated as champion with its hard-fought win over the Norse. Coe took two of three doubles points with an 8-6 win at No. 1 by Molly Fiala (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) and Andrea Schupbach (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) and a 9-7 win at No. 2 by Hannah Jensen (Iowa City, Iowa/West) and Hillary Allen (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins). Fiala and Schupbach extended the Coe lead to 4-2 with identical 6-2, 6-2 victories at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively, while Amy Christenson picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win for Luther at No. 6. The Norse drew even at 4-4 as Fran Fairfield captured a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 and Alana Humpal scored a 1-6, 7-5, 10-5 win at No. 2. Hillary Allen topped Kelsie Allen 7-6 (6), 6-1 at No. 3 singles to record the deciding point for Coe and clinch the back-to-back titles.

Luther has placed first or second 25 times in the 26 years of the Iowa Conference Women's Tennis Championship. The Norse have won 23 titles, finished runner-up twice (2001, 2007) and third once (2006).

In Saturday morning's semifinals, Coe topped Wartburg 5-1, while Luther downed Central 5-0. Wartburg beat Simpson 5-0 and Central topped Cornell 5-1 Friday evening to advance to the semifinals. Cornell beat Simpson 5-0 in Saturday's fifth-place match played at Coe College.
