Kohawks finish second at IIAC Tourney

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa- The Coe men's tennis team held to its seed at this year's Iowa Conference Team Tournament, finishing in second place as the number two seed. Coe defeated Central, the third seed, 5-0 in the semifinals after earning a first round bye. Coe fell to top-seeded Luther 5-1 in the championship match.

The Kohawks swept doubles play against Central. Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) and Sam Zerbib (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) were 8-4 winners at number one doubles, while Tom Jennings (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) and Scott Stegemann (Davenport, Iowa/Central) picked up an 8-3 win at number two doubles. Joey Lankelma (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) and Greg Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./West) earned an 8-2 win at number three doubles.

Janssen was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at number three singles, while Jennings was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at number four singles to finish the match for the Kohawks.

Jennings and Stegemann earned Coe's only win against Luther in the championship match. The duo earned an 8-6 win at number two doubles.

The Kohawks will return to action tomorrow and Saturday, as they will take part in the Iowa Conference Singles and Doubles Tournament. Action starts at 9 a.m. at Coe College.
