Schultz's tosses complete game shutout to eliminate #16 Wash. Univ.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Junior Ellie Schultz (Clayton, Iowa/Clayton Ridge) stayed on her A game in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket Saturday morning as the Kohawks beat Washington Univ. in St. Louis 7-0 in the NCAA Tournament. Schultz gave up just three hits, but didn't allow a runner to advance further than first base in the game. She also struck out five, while not allowing any walks.

The Kohawk offense came alive in the second inning, while only scoring one run on one hit, six different Kohawks reached base in the inning. Sophomore Abby Wedemeier (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) reached on a single to lead off the inning. She moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Krystal Kopp (Solon, Iowa/Solon). Wedemeier scored as freshman CC Williams (Lisbon, Iowa/Lisbon) reached on an error by the first baseman. Freshman Emily Burress (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) came in to pinch run for Williams and scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by junior Amy Hanse (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar). Coe was able to put three more runners on base in the inning, but weren't able to score any more runs.

Sophomore Chelsea Zaugg (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) led off the third inning with a double to left center field. After Wedemeier walked, Kopp drove a single to center field, plating Zaugg for the third run of the game.

The Kohawks failed score in the fourth and fifth innings, but came alive again in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior April Kalmes (Springville, Iowa/Springville) led off the sixth with a walk before moving to second on a single by junior Ashley Leonard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy). Sophomore Erica Smothers (Cedar RApids, Iowa/Kennedy) put both Kalmes and Leonard in scoring position with her second sacrifice bunt of the game. Junior Dani Leavens (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) blasted her second hit of the game, this time a triple to right field to score both Kalmes and Leonard.

Coe wasn't done scoring in the sixth as Wedemeier drove the first pitch of her at-bat to the right field fence for a double, scoring Leavens. Kopp then answered with her second hit of the game, a double to right field that allowed Wedemeier to score Coe's seventh run of the game.

The Kohawks return to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday as they face the winner of the Wartburg vs. Maryville (Mo.) game.
