Schultz's tosses complete
game shutout to eliminate #16 Wash. Univ.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Junior Ellie
Schultz (Clayton, Iowa/Clayton Ridge) stayed
on her A game in the quarterfinals of the consolation
bracket Saturday morning as the Kohawks beat Washington
Univ. in St. Louis 7-0 in the NCAA Tournament. Schultz
gave up just three hits, but didn't allow a runner
to advance further than first base in the game. She
also struck out five, while not allowing any walks.
The Kohawk offense came alive in the
second inning, while only scoring one run on one hit,
six different Kohawks reached base in the inning.
Sophomore Abby Wedemeier (Maynard,
Iowa/West Central) reached on a single to lead off
the inning. She moved up to second on a sacrifice
bunt by freshman Krystal Kopp (Solon,
Iowa/Solon). Wedemeier scored as freshman CC
Williams (Lisbon, Iowa/Lisbon) reached on
an error by the first baseman. Freshman Emily
Burress (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) came
in to pinch run for Williams and scored on a suicide
squeeze bunt by junior Amy Hanse
(Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar). Coe was able to put three
more runners on base in the inning, but weren't able
to score any more runs.
Sophomore Chelsea Zaugg
(Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) led off the third inning
with a double to left center field. After Wedemeier
walked, Kopp drove a single to center field, plating
Zaugg for the third run of the game.
The Kohawks failed score in the fourth
and fifth innings, but came alive again in the bottom
of the sixth inning. Senior April Kalmes
(Springville, Iowa/Springville) led off the sixth
with a walk before moving to second on a single by
junior Ashley Leonard (Cedar Rapids,
Iowa/Kennedy). Sophomore Erica Smothers
(Cedar RApids, Iowa/Kennedy) put both Kalmes and Leonard
in scoring position with her second sacrifice bunt
of the game. Junior Dani Leavens
(Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) blasted her second
hit of the game, this time a triple to right field
to score both Kalmes and Leonard.
Coe wasn't done scoring in the sixth
as Wedemeier drove the first pitch of her at-bat to
the right field fence for a double, scoring Leavens.
Kopp then answered with her second hit of the game,
a double to right field that allowed Wedemeier to
score Coe's seventh run of the game.
The Kohawks return to action at 4 p.m.
on Saturday as they face the winner of the Wartburg
vs. Maryville (Mo.) game.
