Leonard's bomb not enough
as Coe falls to Wisconsin-Whitewater
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Junior Ashley
Leonard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) sent
the fourth pitch of the game over the center field
fence to give the Kohawks a 1-0 lead over #17 Wisconsin-Whitewater,
but it was all Warhawks from then on, as they sent
the Kohawks to the losers bracket with a 9-1 win.
With the loss, the Kohawks, the six seed, will face
seventh-seeded Alma (Mich.) Friday at 12 p.m. in an
elimination game.
After Leonard's first inning home run,
Whitewater sat down 14 straight Kohawks before junior
Amy Hanse's (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar)
fifth inning walk. Coe wasn't able to hit the ball
out of the infield during the stretch.
Junior Ellie Schultz
(Clayton, Iowa/Clayton Ridge) suffered her eighth
loss of the season, giving up eight runs on nine hits
in 3.2 innings. Only four of her eight runs were earned.
She also struck out two, while walking three batters.
Coe will return to action Friday at
12 p.m. to face seventh-seeded Alma (Mich.). The Scots,
25-12 on the year, fell 4-0 to Wartburg in today's
first round.
