Homer Screws took over the Coe women's
soccer team in the fall of 2007. He is also the head
coach of the men's team, a position that he also held
from 1992-1998. During his first stint, the team made
it to the Midwest Conference finals in 1995.
Screws is a native of Tacoma, Wash.
where he was a standout youth and high school all-state
player. He played collegiate soccer at nationally
ranked Warner-Pacific College in Portland, Ore. Screws
had a five-season professional career in which he
played in more than 100 indoor and outdoor games for
teams including the Tacoma Stars, Portland Timbers
and the Atlanta Attack. Unfortunately, he suffered
a career-ending knee injury and has focused on coaching
ever since.
Screws has had success coaching youth players and
various competitive teams over the last 20 years.
Some of the most notable coaching accomplishments
include several state championships, two appearances
at the Region 2 semifinals, and coaching a club team
with a national ranking as high as ninth in the country.
However, if asked, he is most proud of the hundreds
of individual accomplishments in which he has been
part or had some influence. Literally hundreds of
his players have gone on to compete at NCAA Divisions
I, II, III and NAIA levels, with over 100 that were
State ODP players, more than 20 Regional ODP players
and several national team members. Most important
to Screws is that several of his former players have
been inspired to and are now coaching club, high school
and college soccer.
Coach Screws’ mission is
to “develop a winning, positive culture of soccer
of which current, past and future players can be proud.”
Furthermore, he believes the relationships developed
by working toward a common goal will last far longer
and mean more than any result on the playing field.
Assistant Coach Becky Humbert
Becky Humbert, a 2000 graduate of Coe, is currently
a high school social studies teacher and a coach
at Marion High School.
Humbert has received her Bachelor of Arts in history
and masters in education. She has been a soccer coach
for six years.
Humbert was a member of the 1997
and 1998 teams that won the Iowa Conference title.
She was a captain her junior and senior years.
Humbert enjoys coaching at her alma mater and is
proud to be a part of the Coe tradition. "Teamwork and cooperation win
games and determine success," said Humbert. "Without
these, victory is bittersweet."
Humbert is the holder of the USSF National 'D' Coaching
license. She is the 2002 WAMAC Soccer Coach of the
Year and 2003 Metro Soccer Coach of the Year.
