Kohawks suffer first loss of season

A late run by the 14th ranked Kohawks wasn't enough as they were defeated by Loras on homecoming weekend at Coe College. The Duhawks put the final points on the board with 3:47 to play on a 34-yar field goal by Joe Greenley. Greenley had previously had two kicks blocked earlier in the day by junior Zach Nosbisch.

In a a match-up of two of the top defenses in the conference, the game looked to be a shoot-out by the end of the first quarter with the Kohawks trailing 14-10. Both teams scored on all four first quarter possessions. The remaining three quarters would bring the defensive battle everyone was expecting. Two interceptions, two blocked kicks, and a fumble all came from the second quarter on.

Senior Michael Herzberger put the first points on the board with a 27-yard field goal. The three points gave Herzberger 206 career points kicking, the most in Coe history. He later kicked three extra points to up his lead on Rims Roof.

After the Duhawks marched down field 1:28 later for a touchdown to take the lead, it was senior Jon Rife's turn to break some records. Junior Robert DeMoulin hooked up with Rife on a 34-yard tochdown pass, Rife's 22nd career touchdown catch. The touchdown broke the school record for career touchdowns, a mark Rife tied last week. With 8:05 to play in the fourth quarter, the duo hooked up again, this time on an eight-yard catch to give the Kohawks a 30-29 lead.

The Kohawks took a 23-14 lead into halftime, but things turned quickly to the side of the Duhawks to start the second half. The Duhawks had a quick 1:39 second drive to start the half off. The three-play, 60-yard drive was capped by a 45-yard touchdown pass to cut the Kohawk lead to 23-21.

On the Kohawks first drive of the second half, Robert DeMoulin was picked off for just the third time this season at the Kohawk 18. Two plays later the Duhawks scored and converted on the two-point conversion. That gave the Duhawks a 29-23 lead.

Trailing 32-30, the Kohawks marched to midfield, but on a completion from DeMoulin to Neil Suckow, the ball popped loose and the Duhawks recovered to seal the victory.

Coe returns to action next week as they take on Dubuque. Coe has an all-time record of 12-2-1 against the Spartans. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start in Dubuque.
