Engel, McCabe named Outstanding Athletes
Chris Engel '06 and Mike McCabe '06 were named Coe
male and female Athletes of the Year at the 12th annual Barron
Bremner Outstanding Athlete Award ceremony.
Engel, four-year letterwinner in softball, was a two-time first
team all-Iowa Conference selection at first base. She started
in all 172 games during her career at Coe, culminating in the
team's first trip to the College World Series. Engel led the team
in on-base percentage (.393) and RBIs (53) during her senior year,
and ranked second in home runs with nine. Her career records at
Coe include first in home runs (29), first in RBIs (140), fourth
in hits (166),

sixth in doubles (34), and 16th in batting average
(.329).
McCabe, a four-year letterwinner in wrestling, had a record of
77-24 at Coe, including a seventh place finish at nationals (All-American)
in 2005 and a fifth place finish in nationals (All-American) in
2006. He was an NWCA Scholar All-American and earned two first-place
finishes and one second-place finish at the Coe Invitational during
his wrestling career.
Funded by Coe alumnus John Strohm '79 and his wife, Mary Pat Link,
the Bremner award is given annually to the college's top male
and female athletes. The award was named after Barron Bremner
following his retirement after a Hall of Fame career as Coe coach
and athletics director.
