Coe falls to Central in Iowa Conference Tournament opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. - Coe gave up two runs in the fifth inning and three more in the eighth as sixth-seeded Central upset the third-seeded Kohawks in the first round of the Iowa Conference Tournament. Brett Mahan for Central and junior Ryan Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./North) each threw complete games on the mound, striking out a combined 13 batters. Mahan improved to 7-3, while Nicholson dropped to 6-5.

The Kohawks put runners in scoring position in the second, third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings, but weren't able to put a run across the plate. Seniors Cody Smith (Iowa City, Iowa/City), Paul Endriss (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) and Ryan Baranowski (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich), along with freshman Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) each had hits in the top four spots in the Coe lineup, but the Kohawks were a combined 0-for-14 in the five through eight spots.

Coe will return to action Friday as they face fourth-seeded Luther at 10 a.m. in an elimination game. The Kohawks won two out of three games from the Norse in the regular season.
