Kohawks extend streak to four with win over Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa. - After scoring a school-record 33 runs last night, the Kohawks settled for three runs Wednesday at Loras, but it was enough to escape Dubuque with a 3-1 victory. The win helped the Kohawks avoid being swept by the Duhawks this season and gave Coe their fourth straight win.

Sophomore Ryan Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./North) pitched all nine innings for the Kohawks, giving up his lone run in the fifth inning. He struck out six and walked four.

Coe jumped on the boards early with two runs in the first inning. Freshman Nick Robertson (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Moutain Vista) led the game off with a walk. With one out, junior Cody Smith (Iowa City, Iowa/City) reached on a fielder's choice and Robertson advanced to second on an error by Loras' Nick Olberding. Both runners moved up as Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) grounded out to second. Senior Josh Schauf (Maquoketa, Iowa/Maquoketa) then singled to center field to bring both Robertson and Smith in to give the Kohawks the early lead which they would not let go of.

Robertson finished with a game-high two hits and scored one run. Ryan Baranowski (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) scored Coe's other run in the seventh inning on a wild pitch.

The Kohawks return home this weekend for a three-game series with Buena Vista. Friday's game will start at 3 p.m. at Daniels Park. The two teams will play one nine-inning game on Friday, followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
