Joel Holst ’85
A three-year starter and two-year captain for the Coe baseball team, Joel is the only player in school history to top .400 in career hitting. Three times, he was a first-team all-conference selection and was named all-region once during his career. He was the team MVP his senior season, when he led Coe in at-bats, hits, singles, triples, stolen bases, walks, on-base percentage and batting average. Also a three-year starter on the football team, Joel won the Midwest Conference’s Roy Le Clare Award for the two-sport student-athlete with the highest grade point average his junior year.
Tom Kaloupek ’86
A three-time all-conference running back in football, Tom was co-captain his senior year when Coe made their first NCAA Division III playoff appearance. He held the career school record for rushing touchdowns with 24 until 1994. Tom was an outfielder on the baseball team with a career batting average of .355. He was second-team all-conference as a junior when Coe won the Midwest Conference in baseball and team captain his senior year.
Mike Matzen ’86
A four-year football letterwinner and two-time all-conference performer, Mike excelled as a punter and offensive guard. He averaged a school record 41 yards per punt and led the nation in punting yards his senior season, earning All-American honors from Kodak, Pizza Hut and the Associated Press. He still holds Coe’s career record at 40.4 yards per punt. In 1985, Mike set the single season punting record in most punting yards with 2,626 yards which still stands today.
Wally “Skip” Swan ’65 (posthumously)
Skip was the leading scorer on the basketball team and an all-conference performer, averaging 20.5 points per game. He scored a career high 37 points against Grinnell his senior year. A two-sport star, Skip was a three-time all-conference baseball player who earned co-MVP honors his senior season.
Paige Stamp Telecky ’00
Paige was an All-Amercan and three-time all-conference softball player. She led the nation in strikeouts per seven innings her first season at Coe. In 1999, Paige shattered the old school record of 192 strikeouts in a season with 306. In three seasons, she pitched 549 innings which ranks third now in school history.
