Coe College’s New York Term offers you the chance to experience the Big Apple firsthand. This off-campus opportunity consists of 13 weeks of study, work, and stimulating exposure to the arts on a scale that can only be found in one of the most talked-about cities in the world.
New York Term is designed so that students receive one full term of credit—the equivalent of four full courses, or one academic semester on the Coe campus. Students earn the credits by completing these courses in New York City:
THE CORE COURSE
Required. The Core Course covers dance, theatre, music, visual art, and film, and is required of every New York Term student. Because it is central to the term and requires the greatest percentage of a student’s time, the Core Course is worth two (2) course credits.
Required. Students arrange for an Independent Project (or Projects) in an area of special interest under the direction of a member of the resident New York Term faculty. Regular reports are required. Previous projects have included apprenticing with New York artists, interning with off-Broadway theatre companies, assisting writers and/or editors at Writer’s House, and working in a public relations firm. The Project is normally worth two (2) course credits and limited to twenty (20) hours per week. Students may alternatively opt to undertake two different internships at ten (10) hours each. Students who wish to take individual art courses, music lessons, or dance classes to fulfill half of their Independent Project obligation may do so at their own expense - in which case, lessons count for one course credit and the Independent Project counts for the other course credit.
Students must determine their own personal weekly expenses for New York Term. For some students, New York can be very expensive, because there are many exciting (and costly) things to do in the City. For most Coe students, however, New York Term does not greatly exceed Iowa costs if they budget themselves carefully. One student from a recent program has said that she managed to get by spending little more than $75 per week. Another student on the same program reported that she spent closer to $200 per week.
TUITION AND HOUSING
Fees for New York Term are covered by the comprehensive fee paid to the college for Spring. There is, additionally, a supplementary program fee of $1,500, required to help defray the cost of ticketed events and the added expense of living in a New York hotel.
New York Term students are housed in the Hotel Belleclaire (at 77th Street and Broadway). The hotel is twelve blocks north of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and only a few blocks away from either of two subway stations on the same transit line.
Because Coe College does not charge board or provide meals for students engaged in off-campus experiences, it is necessary for students either to eat out or to prepare their own meals when enrolled in New York Term. Food costs can account for the largest variance in students' weekly budgets. Small refrigerators and microwave ovens at the hotel make it possible for students to prepare some of their meals in their own rooms, relieving some of the restaurant costs.
Students on New York Term are responsible for their own transportation to and from New York airports or train stations (and to and from the hotel at the beginning and end of the term), as well as for ground transportation during their stay in the City. Students will not require cars in New York, as parking in New York can be prohibitively expensive. The comprehensive public transportation (subway and bus) system operates around the clock and is relatively inexpensive. The New York Transit Authority issues monthly Metro Cards, which currently cover unlimited subway and bus rides for 30 days at a cost of $112. The total of all transportation costs for the term may add up to somewhere between $600 - $650.

To register, simply fill out the application form and return it to Beth by Friday, September 18, 2016. Upon acceptance into the program, students register for New York Term during the regular registration period for spring term.
IMPORTANT DATES RELATED TO NEW YORK TERM 2017:
*New York Term is a few weeks shorter than Spring Term on the Coe College campus; please note, however, that spring break and other campus holidays are not observed in New York.
The first few days in New York include an orientation meeting with the faculty, a follow-up on Independent Project (internship) leads and positions already procured, and at least two or three core course events.
