Graduate Course Designation

The Coe faculty has designated specific Coe courses that may be taken for graduate credit. Additional work beyond that required for undergraduates is generally required for these courses. Additional courses are occasionally approved; see your MAT advisor if you have a question about a particular course not on the attached list.

Master of Arts in Teaching Courses

Required Core (18 semester hours)

GMA-605 Rethinking Schools. 3 semester hours. A review of contemporary issues that provide an impetus for reconceptualizing the nature and purpose of schooling. 3 semester hours.

GMA-615 Assessment and Learning. An introduction to alternative strategies for assessing student learning. 3 semester hours.

GMA-625 Teaching Diverse Learners. A consideration of the demands on and opportunities for educators teaching an increasingly diverse student population. 3 semester hours.

GMA 635- Instructional Alternatives. A review of promising non-traditional instructional approaches. 3 semester hours.

GMA-645 Curriculum Integration Seminar. Students work on a curriculum project linking the content of their new endorsement area to that of their previous area of certification. 2 semester hours.

GMA-655 Action Research I. Conceptualization and development of a school-based action research project. Prerequisite is the successful completion of at least two core courses. (This is a graduation requirement, completed instead of a thesis or comprehensive exam.) 2 semester hours.

GMA-755 Action Research II. Analysis, summary, and presentation of findings of student's research project. Prerequisite for Action Research II: successful completion of Action Research I. 2 semester hours.

Electives

GMA-905 Seminar/Workshop in (topic). Seminar on selected current issues. Variable credit: 1 to 2 semester hours. Repeated registration is permitted for different topics.

GMA-915 Directed Study. Independent or small-group study initiated by students and completed under the supervision of an appropriate advisor. 1 to 2 semester hours.

Other courses on topics of current interest are offered on a rotating basis.
