Admission Information
Admission to the MAT program at Coe is by written application, with a non-refundable $25.00 fee. Since there are two program options, there are two sets of criteria for admission.
A) Teachers already holding teaching licensure and at least one endorsement. (Degree-seeking)
The MAT program is designed for career teachers who wish to remain in the field of education. Consequently, commitment to and competence in the profession of teaching are the primary admission criteria. Applicants must submit official college transcripts from all colleges and universities that have granted undergraduate or graduate credits, the college application form including a personal statement of educational philosophy and career goals, and two letters of recommendation from school administrators or colleagues.
Admission is on a competitive basis. Successful candidates must have undergraduate grade point averages of 2.7 or higher and excellent letters of recommendation. In addition, a clear and persuasive personal statement is required and given substantial emphasis in the evaluation of applications. Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis.
B) Individuals holding a bachelor's degree not pursuing the MAT degree at Coe. (Non-degree seeking)
Students wishing to receive graduate credit may apply for non-degree status in the MAT program. Non-degree MAT students may enroll in elective graduate courses at Coe. Applicants must submit official college transcript(s) showing completion of a baccalaureate degree, the non-degree application form, and one letter of recommendation from a school administrator or other education professional.
Successful candidates generally must have an undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 or higher, though compensating information may be provided and is considered by the graduate education committee, which approves applicants for admission. A positive letter of recommendation is required. Students admitted to the non-degree status may subsequently apply for regular admission to the MAT program. They may not, however, apply more than 5 semester hours of credit earned in non-degree status toward graduation requirements at Coe.
Students who have been admitted to the program have priority in registering for MAT classes. Non-degree students are allowed to register for MAT classes on a space-available basis. Non-degree acceptance and registration in MAT courses does not guarantee admission to the MAT program.
