Course Description:
Dramaturgy: At the Core of the Liberal Arts Experience
This class is intended to be an introduction to Dramaturgy, a field that has existed in the European theatre for three centuries. In this country, though it has also been part of theatre practice for nearly as long, it has only recently, in the last twenty years, become institutionalized. Today, there are many MFA Dramaturgy programs throughout the country, and most of the larger theatres employ full-time Dramaturgs.

Dramaturgy, from a theatrical perspective, is where theory and practice meet. But from an academic perspective, it can also be where the Liberal Arts come together, where students can see the ways in which the Sciences and the Humanities often intersect, where the histories of culture, science, literature, music, fine arts, technology and philosophy have to join forces to make the world of a play come alive. During this seminar we will explore two or three dramatic texts and engage in the necessary research to examine the ways in which such learning can happen.
