General Information
The
First Year Research Experience (FYRE) at Coe College offers exceptionally
qualified students the opportunity to begin their college careers
by doing science. Students selected as FYRE Scholars will work
side-by-side with Coe faculty and students on a wide variety
of research problems ranging from atmospheric chemistry to forest
ecology. FYRE Scholars will be a part of a nationally-recognized
undergraduate science program and work with state-of-the-art
scientific instrumentation.
The program will begin on June 16 and end August 8. During the
program, you will receive free housing on campus along with the
other FYRE Scholars and a resident assistant. You will also receive
a $2,500 stipend. (Special opportunity – there is also
a FYRE opportunity in mathematics with a $1,200 stipend. See
Prof. White's research description.)
What do past students say about the program?
- "This was probably the most fruitful summer of my
life, I did more this summer than I have in all of my summers
combined. It beats just sitting around at home and wishing
you had something to do. I got to do work that was actually
relevant to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life."
- "After this, adjusting to Coe has been a cinch; it makes
things flow so much smoother. And now that I know about the
campus and the surrounding area, it is amazing. It makes the
transition so easy it isn't funny. Already having exposure
to people is probably the best part, though."
- "The experience was amazing. I never would have thought
working in a lab all summer would be so educational but at
the same time so fun. I realize how lucky I am to have already
have met professors, students, and Cedar Rapids."
- "All of us agree that not only was it good for us for
the experience, but we actually enjoyed the work we did. We
also appreciate being able to get adjusted to the campus before
school started and being able to know the professors and staff.
I think in the end, we all developed an even greater love for
the field we were in."
- "It really helped me to get to know the campus and to
meet the faculty. I learned a lot about science, but I also
enjoyed talking to older Coe students and getting advice from
them. I felt like I was at an advantage when I started classes
since I was here all summer and I had already met some people."
