Sample Curriculums
To major in French, German, or Spanish if you haven’t had French before, or didn’t have a strong background in high school:
Year 1: Elementary I (FRE, GER, SPA-115), Elementary II (FRE, GER, SPA-125).
Year 2: Intermediate I (FRE, GER, SPA-215), Intermediate II (FRE, GER, SPA-225) & one course taught in English in the first two years.
Year 3: Composition & Conversation (FRE, GER, SPA-315), 3 credits from a Coe exchange program.
Year 4: Introduction to Literature (FRE, GER, SPA-335) and two 400-level courses.
To major in French, German, and Spanish Studies if you start your language studies at Coe and without doing a semester abroad:
Year 1: Elementary I (FRE, GER, SPA-115), Elementary II (FRE, GER, SPA-125).
Year 2: Intermediate I (FRE, GER, SPA-215), Intermediate II (FRE, GER, SPA-225).
Year 3: Composition & Conversation (FRE, GER, SPA-315), Introduction to Literature (FRE, GER, SPA-335).
Year 4: Two 400-level courses and five French, German, or Spanish-related courses in English (with an agreement with the appropriate program director).
To major in a language if you come to Coe with a strong background (3-4+ years):
Year 1: Composition & Conversation (FRE, GER, SPA-315), Introduction to Literature (FRE, GER, SPA-335).
Years 2-4: Six 400-level courses (or five with one course taught in English) OR Three 400-level courses and three credits from a Coe exchange program.
