Academic Requirements
To be recommended for certification, a student must have a baccalaureate degree, a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or above, and a grade point average of 2.7 or above in each teaching field.
The requirements for elementary certification are:
- A grade point average of 2.7 in the professional education core
- Field experience prior to student teaching
- A concentration in Elementary Education and Liberal Studies. Required course work includes humanities, social sciences, mathematics, natural sciences and a minor or equivalent in a liberal arts discipline
- Teaching methods courses in elementary school subjects
- A full term of student teaching.
The requirements for secondary certification are:
- A recommendation by each department in which a teaching certificate is sought (Teaching field(s) must be subjects which are ordinarily taught in secondary schools and for which Coe has approval by the Iowa Department of Instruction.)
- Field experience prior to student teaching
- A grade point average of 2.7 or better must be achieved in the professional education core and one of the special methods courses offered
- A full term of student teaching
The professional education core includes the following five courses:
- EDU 205 Educational Foundations
- EDU 215 Practicum in Education
- EDU 255 Exceptional Learners
- EDU 385 Human Relations in the Classroom
- EDU 435 Educational Psychology
