The Stead Department of Business Administration and Economics at Coe College offers degrees in accounting, business administration, and economics that prepare you for successful careers in various fields of business and economics, or for graduate studies. In Coe's program, you will be exposed to broad areas of study in business and economics, and will have opportunities to focus your work in specific fields such as finance, industrial organization, international economics, management, or marketing by studying with professors in their specialized areas. As a business or economics major at Coe, you will also benefit from a strong liberal arts curriculum that broadens your intellectual horizons and provides sound preparation for a lifetime of career success in a business or professional field.
Students at Coe frequently complete double majors in business administration and economics or business administration and accounting. Others choose a second major or minor in disciplines such as history, political science, psychology, sociology, foreign languages, speech, and computer science.
Many business and economics majors choose to pursue advanced degrees following graduation from Coe. In the last 15 years, more than 200 department graduates have gone on to earn their M.B.A., Ph.D., or J. D. at prestigious institutions including Harvard, Vanderbilt, The University of Chicago, Brown, Northwestern, Berkeley, Washington University, Thunderbird, Stanford, Columbia, the University of Michigan and Cornell University. Working with departmental advisors, students select courses that will best prepare them for advanced study.
Class sizes vary, with most classes limited to 30 students. Enrollment in most upper-level courses is 15 or fewer students. This small class size allows for individualized attention and the use of participatory learning methods. Upper-level business and economics students are given the opportunity to work as paid tutors and conduct help sessions for introductory students.
