Coe Evolving

The Biology Department at Coe offers two courses in evolutionary biology, Organic Evolution with no prerequisite and Topics in Evolution with the prerequisite of Cellular and Molecular biology. A number of other courses, including General Botany, Ecology and Behavior of Vertebrates, and Ecology also have strong evolutionary components.

2009 marks the bicentennial of the birth of Charles Darwin and the sesquicentennial of the publication of On the Origin of Species. To mark this day Dr. Thomas Givnish, Henry Allen Gleason Prof. of Botany at the University of Wisconsin, spoke at Coe's Darwin Day celebration on Feb. 12, 2009. Dr. Givnish is a noted authority on the evolution and adaptive radiation of plants. His current research focuses on Hawaiian lobeliad radiation, and the evolutionary history of monocots. We finished the evening with birthday cake and a fireworks display on the Quad.
