In order for a student to obtain certification as an athletic trainer (ATC®) the first requirement is the student must graduate from an athletic training education program which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Accredited education programs offer didactic course work in a variety of areas and classroom learning is enhanced through "hands-on" clinical experiences under the supervision of a certified athletic trainer.
After meeting the graduation requirement, the student must then pass the examination administered by the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC). This national board examination has been developed to assess the student's knowledge on subject matter from all the domains of athletic training. Only after passing this national board examination will individuals obtain their certification as an athletic trainer (ATC®).
