Internship Opportunities
Most Psychology majors at Coe complete their
Practicum experience by completing a career-related internship
or a research project. An internship can significantly strengthen
a student’s candidacy for graduate schools and for jobs.
The Psychology Department works with the college internship
coordinator. In recent years, psychology
students have held internships at Tanager Place,
Four Oaks, Department of Corrections, Cedar
Rapids Police Dept, and Polk Elementary
School. Examples of work that current
students and recent graduates have completed include:
Some Recent Internships:
- Tiffany Miller ('06) worked at Waypoint
Services as an advocate for victims of sexual assault.
- Erin Blythe ('07) completed a social
work internship at the Linn County Department of Human Services.
- Valerie Curre ('06) coordinated
summer conferences at Coe College during the summer of
2005.
- Jessica Widmeyer ('03) worked with
sexually abused teenage girls at Tanager Place, leading group
counseling sessions and providing individual guidance to young
women residing at the facility.
- Brandon Jolly ('03) counseled students
with developmental adjustment problems at Tanager Place, a
residential treatment facility for youth, and was offered
a job on graduation as the result of his internship work.
- Tom Pietras ('02) completed a neuroscience
internship at the Brain Research Institute at the University
of Florida, investigating the role of brain peptides in controlling
eating.
- Carrie Woline ('03) worked in Public
Relations at St. Luke’s Hospital and was involved in
providing information to the public regarding hospital programs.
- Erin Redmon ('04), interned at REM,
a nationwide human service organization. Erin helped people
with developmental disabilities learn skills that would help
them to live as independently as possible.
- Rachel Daly ('03) worked in the Human
Resources department for the City of Cedar Rapids, developing
programs to improve employee relations.
- Tara Strang ('04) interned at the Sedlacek
Treatment Center at Mercy Medical Center. Tara worked with
individuals receiving treatment for chemical dependency.
- Shamra Boel ('03) worked with children
and young adults with developmental disabilities at Foundation2,
a local human services agency.
