BSN Admission Policy
To be eligible for admission to the Department
of Nursing students must:
- File an application for admission to the Department of Nursing
by December 1 of their sophomore year.
- General education courses (including a Humanities and Fine
Arts course) to equal 16 course credits consisting of supporting
(prerequisite) and elective courses by completion of their
sophomore year.
- Satisfactorily complete (C or higher) or be in the
process of completing the following prerequisite courses.

- *Achieve a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.7 or above. Students completing
the majority of these 16 course credits at Coe College will
be given priority. Students with a GPA lower than 2.7 may be
considered for admission on a space available basis.
- It is expected that students will have no record of criminal
or adult abuse offense. However, if there is an offense students
can submit an Explanation of Offense to the Iowa Department
of Human Services and may be granted permission to work in
health care facilities.
- Students must submit to a functional assessment by a licensed
independent practitioner and be found to be safe to work in
healthcare facilities.
- Students must provide proof of immunizations as specified
in the Nursing Department Student Policy Manual. (available
upon request)
- Students must possess valid licensure as a Certified
Nursing Assistant.
- Student must be certified annually in CPR for the healthcare
provider.
*The Nursing Department Admissions, Promotion, and Retention
committee reviews all applications and selects candidates who
are best qualified to meet the standards of the nursing profession.
In reviewing applications, the committee considers criteria such
as GPA, academic performance in the supporting courses, as well
as the number of supporting courses taken at Coe College.
