| Description of Program |
The Chiang Mai Exchange Program is intended to provide a
student with three things: 1) experience in teaching English
to non-native speakers; 2) an introduction to the Thai language;
and 3) an opportunity to explore a topic of his or her own
choice relating to Thai culture. Each student is required
to complete an internship in teaching English to non-native
speakers. In this internship, he or she assists the Thai and
foreign staff with the multi-section English skills classes
taught by the English Department of the University. This entails
working with students with their writing and pronunciation
in groups and one-on-one. The internship part of the study
abroad program bears two Coe credits. The Thai language segment
is an introduction to the Thai language and is intended to
give the student a basic functional familiarity with the language.
This segment bears one Coe credit. The final segment is an
independent study in an area of the student’s interest.
This is to be arranged with a professor at the student’s
home institution before leaving for Thailand and is evaluated
by the professor at the home institution. This segment bears
one Coe credit. The term bears four Coe credits, which is
the normal load per term for a student attending Coe. |
