Facilities
The Dows Fine Arts Center houses state-of-the-art facilities
for the wide range of courses offered by the department. Students
have access to the studios 24 hours a day.
Ceramics
- fully equipped studios, including separate areas for throwing
and hand-building; a damp room and a kiln yard which houses
two large gas kilns and a Raku kiln
- separate clay mixing and glaze formulation areas and four
indoor electric kilns
Digital Art
- a state-of-the-art computer graphics center, including twelve
G4 workstations with CD and DVD burners, flatbed and slide scanners,
color laser printer, 42" wide inkjet printer, film recorder,
3 video-editing workstations, and complete Internet access
- software includes Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe
After Effects, Adobe Premiere, Strata 3D Pro, and Quark Xpress,
Dreamworks, Fireworks, Flash, and Maya
Drawing
- separate studios for life drawing, graphics, and design
Painting
- two large studios - each with 25- foot high ceilings and large
windows for natural lighting
Photography
- two complete darkrooms with facilities for black-and-white
and color
- facilities for photo documentation, large and medium format,
and studio set-ups
Printmaking
- a studio fully equipped for intaglio, wood cut, stone and
plate lithography, silkscreen, and monoprinting
- includes three presses and facilities for both hand and photo-mechanical
processes
Sculpture
- an extensive studio with high ceilings and the necessary power
and hand tools for working with a variety of materials
Art History
- an extensive slide library of over 25,000 slides, serving
all studio areas and art history
- a library collection of over 7800 art and art history selections
and periodicals
Additional Facilities
- two art galleries with museum-quality lighting and humidity
controls for monthly traveling exhibitions and student shows
- an extensive permanent collection of art consisting of about
465 works by nearly 300 artists, spanning several centuries
and five continents
- private, lockable studio spaces for advanced students
