The Coe community is mourning the loss of Life Trustee K. Raymond Clark '30, who passed away early on Wednesday, July 20. Clark, 96, died of an apparent ruptured aneurysm at Northwestern Memorial Hospital near his apartment residence in Chicago.
Funeral services were held at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids last Monday, with entombment in the Cedar Memorial Mausoleum. A memorial service will be held at Coe sometime this fall.
A 1930 graduate of Coe College, Clark became the college's preeminent benefactor by contributing more than $16 million to his alma mater. Most notably, Clark provided funding for the Clark Racquet Center and Clark Field, the first large scale facilities on Coe's east campus, in 1989. Clark also funded the construction of Clark Alumni House in 1993.
The Clark Merit Awards, funded in perpetuity by Clark, have provided tuition for 10 students to attend Coe each year since 1996. Most recently, Clark provided an endowment for the establishment of the Coe College Contemporary Issues Forum, which brings to audiences of the college the presence and views of distinguished professionals whose work has received national recognition.
A tribute to the life and legacy of K. Raymond Clark will be included in upcoming editions of the Coe College Courier.

Physics department receives NSF grant

Coe students will soon benefit from a $272,000 four-year grant awarded to the college by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support continuing undergraduate glass research. Specifically, the Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) funding will be utilized by Coe's physics department, which is recognized worldwide for its innovative studies of glass. The funding is the latest in a series of external grants received by Coe's science programs over the past few years, with more than $1.5 million going to the physics program alone. Approximately one in six grant applications receive funding, demonstrating the highly competitive nature of the NSF grant process.

The $1.3 million transition of the Gage Memorial Union Dining Hall will be completed by the time students return to campus in August. The dining hall will feature nearly continuous dining from 7:15 a.m. to 10 p.m. and 11 food stations with an emphasis on fresh food cooked to order. The dining hall – affectionately labeled "The U" by student leaders – will have eye-appealing decor to promote a laid-back, coffee shop atmosphere.
  • The P.U.B. is also getting some much-needed attention. The main floor, now called "Charlie's," will house The Stomping Grounds (serving Starbuck's coffee), Grill 155, the Smart Market, and a new performance venue for student activities. The decor of Charlie’s will feature softer coffeehouse-style furniture, a fresh coat of paint, ambient lighting and a new focus on meeting the needs of students.
  • Construction of McCabe Hall, Coe's new administration building, is progressing rapidly, and work is scheduled to be completed in November. To see photos of the McCabe project go to the Coe Web site at: http://www.coe.edu/aboutcoe/gallery/mccabe/mccabebuild.html.
