Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama greeted members of the Coe community at a campus appearance last fall.
Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama is scheduled to hold an Economic Security Town Hall meeting at 11:30 this morning at Eby Fieldhouse on the Coe campus. Obama, who canceled a June visit to Cedar Rapids because of flooding, will also meet with residents affected by the flood. The visit will be his second to Iowa since winning the state's first-in-the-nation precinct caucuses in January and his second visit to Coe.
Tickets are required for the event. They were distributed earlier this week through the Obama campaign office and are no longer available.
Obama previously appeared at Coe on Oct. 29 as part of the second MySpace/MTV Presidential Dialogue. More than 225 Coe students participated in the dialogue held in Dows Theatre, which was streamed live to MySpace and MTV Web sites, as well as MTV mobile. The event was broadcast across the country on MTV. Following the broadcast, Obama spoke to a large crowd from Coe and the community at large on the quad.

Coe Touring Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band to perform in Taiwan, China

Nearly 50 members of the Coe College Touring Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band are set to travel to Taiwan and China Aug. 3-11. The ensembles consist of Coe students, faculty, alumni and friends, led by Coe Professor of Music and Band Director William Carson and music instructor Steve Shanley. The groups will perform farewell concerts in Cedar Rapids and the Chicago area, then give three performances in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Concerts will consist of six pieces by the touring wind ensemble and six pieces by the touring jazz ensemble, including the appropriately titled Sousa march, "Hands Across the Sea." While overseas, the students will also visit many historical and cultural sites.
In previous years, Coe band students have been given the opportunity to understand other nation's cultures through band trips to Korea, England and Scotland. Carson looks forward to continuing this tradition during the band visit to the Far East.
Before leaving for China, the band will perform a farewell concert in front of the Marquis Hall steps on the Coe campus on Friday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. (rain location Sinclair Auditorium). This performance is open to the public. There will also be a performance on Saturday, Aug. 2 at 2 p.m. in Libertyville, Ill., at the "Festival of the Arts." This is an annually held event in downtown Libertyville's Cook Park and hosted by the David Adler Music and Arts Center.

Coe provides flood recovery support

Despite sustaining damage from last month's floodwaters, Coe is providing support for flood recovery. The college has provided hundreds of overnight stays in its residence halls and apartments since mid-June, and is making office and meeting space available to organizations affected by the flood.
Plans are currently being finalized to provide major community service opportunities during the school year for Coe students, faculty, staff and alumni. The goal is to provide ample opportunities for the Coe community to make a positive impact on flood recovery in the greater Cedar Rapids area. Details will be announced as classes begin.
Finally, Coe administrators and faculty are holding ongoing discussions with several performing arts groups about the possibility of utilizing Sinclair Auditorium and other campus facilities for their performances as needed in the coming months.
