| Johnsons establish
$1 million scholarship fund for Coe students |
William P. "Bill"
Johnson '53
and his wife, Lynda, have established a $1 million endowed
fund to provide scholarships for Colorado students who
choose to attend Coe. Specifically, first preference
will be given to students who graduate from high school
in the Boulder Valley School District in Boulder, Colo.,
where the Johnsons reside.
The Lynda B. and William P. Johnson Endowed Scholarship
Fund awards will be $12,500 per year or more. One new
scholarship will be awarded to a first-year student each
year, and the scholarships will extend four school years
if the individual recipients remain in good academic standing
at Coe.
The latest gift represents the second large scholarship fund
created by the Johnsons to support Coe students. In
1998, the couple established a $400,000 scholarship fund
to benefit high school students attending Coe from Bill's
hometown of Muscatine, Iowa. The Helen E. and Arthur
Johnson Scholarship was named in honor of Bill's parents,
who were longtime educators. Arthur Johnson was superintendent
of schools in Muscatine for 30 years.
Bill Johnson graduated from Coe College in 1953 with a degree
in political science. Following service in the Air
Force, Johnson earned his law degree at the University of
Colorado in 1958. An attorney and banking executive,
Johnson is a partner in the law firm of Rothgerber, Johnson & Lyons
LLP in Denver. He has been involved in various banking
and community organizations over the years, and he has served
as a member of the Coe College Board of Trustees since 1988.
Lynda is a graduate of Southern Methodist University and
is a community volunteer. She has served on numerous
nonprofit boards, and chaired the board of the more than
$500 million Denver Foundation. Lynda participates
as a member of the Colorado Women's Forum and the International
Women's Forum, and has served on the board of the Boulder
Community Hospital Foundation. She is currently involved
in raising money for women political candidates seeking national
office.
"Lynda and I recognize the value of education and the high
quality academic programs offered by Coe College," said
Bill Johnson. "We
are pleased to establish this scholarship fund to provide educational opportunities
for students in the Boulder area to enroll at Coe."
In commenting on the latest gift from the Johnsons, Coe President
James Phifer noted their ongoing, generous support of the
institution. "Bill and Lynda Johnson have been long-standing
supporters of Coe, not only providing significant monetary
contributions, but also giving their time and talent. This
substantial gift once again demonstrates their commitment
to the college," said Phifer. "We are
grateful for the support provided by the Johnsons, which
will provide Coe scholarship opportunities in perpetuity
to students in the Boulder area." |

| Academic accomplishments highlighted
at Student Research Symposium |
 |
| Erin Ridley '10 and Sakinah Haque '09
showcased their research project, "Water Quality
in Lime Creek: Effects of Best Management Practices," at
the Student Research Symposium. Their faculty advisor
for the project was Chemistry Professor and Associate
Dean of the Faculty Marty St. Clair (right). |
More than 50 Coe students
showcased their academic projects recently as part of the
college's eighth annual Student Research Symposium. The
symposium presentations, which ranged from academic research
to artistic display and performance, represented the culmination
of work done by students over the past academic year. Some
of the student work was done independently, with some accomplished
as part of a student and faculty team. The featured
work represented in the symposium was the result of honors
projects, student participation in ongoing professional
research programs, and the cumulative product of an undergraduate
career of achievement in the arts. The event featured
several Coe alumni as guest speakers. Drew
Westberg '05 discussed his graduate work and subsequent
work as long range planning coordinator for the city of
Cedar Rapids. His presentation was entitled: "The
Evolution of the City: It's Time to Re-Envision
Tomorrow and Your Place in It." The graduate
and professional school panel included Warren Clarida '04,
a physics major at Coe who is now in the Ph.D. program
for physics at the University of Iowa; Matt Bream
'07, a chemistry and general science major at Coe who is
currently in medical school at the University of Iowa; Rachel
Parr '07,
a psychology and philosophy major at Coe who is in the
J.D. program at the University of Iowa College of Law;
and Benjamin Tallman '04, a
psychology major at Coe who is studying counseling psychology
in the Ph.D. program at the University of Iowa.

| Kohawks head into tournament action |
 |
| The Coe women's tennis team has advanced
to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.
The Kohawks are led by Molly Fiala '09, a three-time
Iowa Conference MVP. |
The end of the spring season is near
for many Kohawk Athletic teams. The baseball and softball
teams are preparing for Iowa Conference Tournament action,
while both tennis squads are looking ahead to the NCAA Regionals.
- For the second-straight year,
the women's tennis team has earned an automatic berth
in the NCAA Tournament. After
defeating Wartburg 5-0 in the semifinals, the Kohawks
held on for a 5-4 win over Luther in the championship
match that lasted over four hours last weekend at Coe.
- The Coe
softball team continues to be in the upper third of the
Iowa Conference standings, as they sit in third place
with just two games remaining. The Kohawks
have been nationally ranked throughout the season and
look to carry their hot play into the Iowa Conference
Tournament.
- The
men's tennis team earned the #2 seed at the Iowa Conference
Tournament, scheduled for this weekend at Clark Racquet
Center. The winner of the team tournament
gains an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
- After a
disappointing season last year, the Coe baseball team
has bounced back this spring. Already surpassing
last year's win total, the Kohawks are in third place
in the Iowa Conference standings with one week to play
in the regular season. This year's Iowa Conference
Tournament will be held in Cedar Rapids May 8-10.
- Kyle Brockmeyer '09
has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track
and Field Championships. His time
of 14.95 in the 110-meter hurdles at the Central Invitational
earned him a spot in the field. Brockmeyer will
have to wait until the end of the year to see if his
time holds up.
